    Moisture-Ingress Induced Failures with Submersible Pressure Sensors

    Moisture ingress is one of the top causes of pressure sensor failure and the main reason for this would be the entry of water at the interface between the cable and pressure sensor or through the vent tubes. That is because moisture and electrical connections simply don’t mix, resulting in internal electronics failure.

    As a result, output drift or complete failure of the pressure sensor occurs. This risk exemplifies the reason why you should carefully evaluate the operating conditions before you select a pressure sensor type for any given application.

    However, some pressure sensors are especially designed to be used in conditions where there are humidity and moisture. For example, such applications include pressure sensors that are used in food-processing facilities and mining and construction equipment. Once you are familiar with the environmental conditions that will impact your pressure sensors, you will have a better idea of which sensor will work best for your application.

    Cable seal:

    We practice two types of cable sealing

    1) fill the electrical interface with a permanent sealant
    2) Using media compatible O-ring seals

    Both the methods have got a high level of IP rating but the sealant method is the best and reliable one. On the other hand using O-ring provides a more economical option which can be easily assembled during manufacturing and reduces the time required for curing of sealant.


    Use a Vent Tube

    Typically, the submersible level sensor’s design incorporates a vent tube that allows the sensor to adjust for small barometric pressure changes that might otherwise have a significant impact on the performance and accuracy of the pressure sensor.

    There is a possibility that moisture can enter back of the level sensor and if the vent tube is connected to the back of the sensing diaphragm, the probability of electronics damage reduces. And by filling the Submersible pressure sensors with a potting element any moisture entering between the wires will not be able to reach the electronics.
