Understand Intended Load Cell Application in Detail
The type of load cell to be used depends on the method of measurement, the application warrants and the way in which the load is to be applied for weight determination. For example, when a compression load cell is used, the load which is to be weighed is placed at a single point for measurement and is positioned above the load cell.
The type of load cell also depends on what you want to measure. For example, a compression load cell is apt if you want to measure the pushing force along one axis whereas a tension load cell is ideal if you want to measure the pulling force.
It is also important to know how the application will be executed. Will the application be executed in a hot or cold environment? Will the application be carried out by being submerged in water or out of it? Factors such as these should be considered.
Determine Maximum and Minimum Load Limits
Determine the maximum and minimum capacity of load that your application demands for optimal performance. It is important to set the limits correctly. For example, if you are setting the maximum load limit, then choose a limit that is greater than the highest operating load limit for the device. When defined thus, any extraneous load that is applied will not negatively affect the performance of the application.
When load limits are not set appropriately, it leads to the selection of a wrong load cell, which results in inaccurate results.
Analyse How the Load Cell and the Facilitating Equipment Will be Used
Is the intended load static or dynamic? Will the load cell be used live in process line? How will the load cell be mounted (e.g. on the sides or below the facilitating device)? These are some of the questions that need to be answered to know how the load cell will be used.
In addition, the shape of the facilitating equipment with which the load cell will be used has to be considered. Device shape helps determine the right load cell that fits into it perfectly.
